For the Fara Dumplings:

  • 1 Cups Rice flour
  • 1/4 Cups Urad dal (split black gram) or chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp Finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp Finely chopped green chilies (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp Ghee or oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water, as needed

For the Filling (optional):

  • 1/2 Cups Finely chopped onions
  • 1/2 Cups Grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp Chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp Crushed peanuts
  • 1 tbsp Sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

    1. Prepare the Filling (if using):

    • Heat a small pan and dryroast the fennel seeds until fragrant.
    • In the same pan, add alittle oil and sauté the onions until translucent.
    • Add the grated coconut,chopped coriander, crushed peanuts, fennel seeds, and salt. Cook for a fewminutes until the mixture is well combined. Set aside to cool.

    2. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a mixing bowl, combinerice flour with salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and cumin seeds.
    • Heat ghee or oil in a smallpan, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Then add this to the rice flourmixture.
    • Gradually add water to therice flour mixture and knead it into a soft, smooth dough. The dough should bepliable but not too sticky. Let it rest for 10-15 minutes.

    3. Shape the Dumplings:

    • Take small portions of thedough and flatten them slightly in your palms to form small discs. If using thefilling, place a small amount in the center of each disc and fold the edges toseal it, forming a small ball or oval shape.

    4. Steam the Dumplings:

    • Prepare a steamer or a large pot with a steaming rack. Grease the steaming rack or tray with a little oil.
    • Place the prepareddumplings on the rack, ensuring they are not touching each other.
    • Steam the dumplings for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

    5. Serve:

    • Allow the Fara dumplings tocool slightly before serving.
    • Serve warm with chutney or yogurt on the side.
