Ingredients

  • 500 grams Fish Kingfish or Snapper
  • 1 Cup Coconut Milk
  • 1 Onion, Thinly Sliced
  • 2 Green Chilies
  • 1 Piece of Ginger
  • 3-4 Cloves of Garlic, Minced
  • 1 tbsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Black Pepper Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp Fenugreek Seeds
  • 2-3 Curry Leaves
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves for Garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Fish

  • Clean the fish fillets under running water and pat them dry with paper towels. Cut them into medium-sized pieces and marinate with salt and lemon juice. Let them sit for about 15-20 minutes.

Temper Mustard Seeds

  • Heat coconut oil in a deep pan or kadhai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

Add Sliced Onions and Curry Leaves

  • Add sliced onions, green chilies, ginger, garlic, and curry leaves to the pan. Sauté them until the onions turn translucent and aromatic.

Spice it Up

  • Now, add turmeric powder and red chilli powder to the pan. Stir well to combine the spices with the onions mixture.

Pour Coconut Milk

  • Pour the thin coconut milk into the pan and bring it to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Place the marinated fish pieces into the pan

  • Carefully place the marinated fish pieces into the pan, ensuring they are submerged in the coconut milk mixture. Cover the pan and let the fish cook for about 8-10 minutes on low heat until they are cooked through and tender.

Cook the Fish

  • Once the fish is cooked, pour in the thick coconut milk and gently stir to combine. Be careful not to break the fish pieces.

Simmer and Season

  • Allow the curry to simmer for another 2-3 minutes to thicken slightly and for the flavors to intensify.
  • Check for seasoning and adjust salt and spice levels according to your taste preference.
  • Turn off the heat and garnish the Kerala Fish Moilee with freshly chopped coriander leaves.

Serve Hot

  • Serve hot with steamed rice or appam for a delicious and authentic Kerala meal experience.
